A lichen-based anti-desertification device, the project explores a biological pathway to addressing desertification through symbiotic systems
The project proposes a material-based design framework that integrates lichen growth into extreme environments — into the mineral substrate beneath the desert — where locally sourced sand brick walls form the substrate, and an embedded fog condensation system provides lichen with a sustained water supply. By observing the symbiotic process between lichen and stone — inorganic matter gradually decomposed and transformed — the project examines how interactions between materials can improve soil quality across time, allowing land to regain the possibility of regeneration under harsh conditions
